No More Showing Up Part Time: 3 Ways To Bring Your Personality Into Your Career

Most ambitious women have one thing in common: THEY LIKE TO WIN.

They believe that in order to be successful, you have to put in the work.

Like most of us, you were taught that there’s no other option—either go to college and get a degree, or pick up a trade, but whatever it is you need to find a job that’s going to guarantee you security and money so you aren’t living paycheck to paycheck.

With that fire underneath you, you set out and did just that. But now that you’ve been putting in the time for someone else’s dream you feel less impactful and more like a pawn. Also, because you were taught to follow the rules so you don’t risk losing your job, you feel uncomfortable showing up authentic and default to leaving your personality at the door along with your dreams.

In this blog we’re going to rewrite the rules so you are no longer showing up as yourself part-time and an employee full-time.

First we’re going to start with:

#1 Identifying who are when no one is looking

As we just stated, you are used to hanging your authenticity up at the door. You think that if you voice your opinion or show up as your edgy and quirky self, you’ll be judged and asked to leave.

To show up as yourself full time you have to identify what qualities or skills you express when no one is watching and embrace them. Instead of hiding, incorporate your true perspective into conversations and strategies. You’ll feel free.

#2 Ask yourself, can I help another person with the characteristics I keep out of my professional world

Growing up many people are taught that keeping your personal life and professional life separate is the safest way to stay in a job long term. So the woman you are in your downtime never would step foot into your office doors. In order to feel more genuine in your career, ask yourself: Of the personality that I am hiding, which part can help someone solve a problem. Is it your ability to tell a story, is it your passion for being a peacemaker during debates? Is it your ability to create?

Which qualities do you have that never make into your professional world because of that rule? Give yourself permission to speak up at a meeting and offer your out-of-the-box perspective. You’ll feel empowered.

#3 Brainstorm. Which career position can you fill with the personality, characteristics and skills you have outside of work?

A lot of people fear that if they make their hobbies their main focus they’ll become imbalanced and regret this move. To show up as yourself full time, however, it’s important to do something you are passionate about and something you can do without getting paid for it, although the mission is get a paycheck and make a living.

Ask yourself, what are ways you can turn your natural gifts, personality, skills and qualities into a revenue stream. If you love yoga, could it be that being a yoga instructor can #1 allow you to show up as yourself,  #2 allow you to impact others and #3 bring in cashflow?

Take time to brainstorm on which careers can line up with your traits.
